1953年2月9日生まれ、北アイルランド・ベルファスト出身。

ロンドンの王立演劇学校を卒業し、舞台で活躍。1981年の映画『エクスカリバー』以降、舞台、映画でも活躍しており、実力派俳優として知られている。

主な映画出演作は『ロード・トゥ・パーディション』（2002年）、『ミュンヘン』（2005年）、『ウーマン・イン・ブラック亡霊の館』（2012年）など。
