1930年8月25日生まれ、2020年10月31日没、スコットランド・エディンバラ出身。

サッカー選手などさまざまな仕事を経て、1954年から芸能活動を始める。1961年、『007 ドクター・ノオ』から「007」シリーズでジェームズ・ボンドを演じる。初代ジェームズ・ボンドとして計7作に出演している。1987年『アンタッチャブル』でアカデミー助演男優賞を受賞。2000年にはナイトの称号を得た。2020年10月、永眠。享年90歳だった。

主な映画出演作は『007 ロシアより愛をこめて』（1963年）、『薔薇の名前』（1986年）、『ザ・ロック』（1996年）など。
